Bovril is a savory yeast extract, sold in a distinctive jar and made in Burton on Trent by Unilever UK. Often made
into a drink by diluting with hot water, it can also be used as a flavouring for soups, stews and porridge or
used as a spread on bread or toast, similar to Marmite. It's a healthy source of B vitamins and for
generations a warm thermos of Bovril "tea" has been the favored way to fend off the winter chill at soccer
matches all over the UK.
In November of 2004 Unilever announced that the composition of Bovril was being changed from beef to
yeast extract. This was done both in the hope of allaying fears of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or
mad-cow disease) and to make the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans. According to the manufacturer,
"in blind taste tests, 10% didn't notice any difference in taste, 40% preferred the original and 50% preferred the new..."
