Typhoo Tea...
| Originally called Typhoo Tipps, this British favorite has been around for over 100 years. John Sumner, a Birmingham grocer started Typhoo based on a suggestion from his sister Mary. The tea was made from small particles instead of the large leaf variety that was common at the time. Originally made from Ceylonese tea, this was the first brand to be sold pre- packaged instead of loose over the counter and was claimed to help with indigestion. By making the tea from the outer edges of the tea leaf the product had less indigestion-causing tannin. The tea was originally promoted by giving away a jar of cream with each pound of tea purchased. Popularity grew rapidly and stays that way today with 90 cups of refreshing Typhoo being drunk every second. They say there’s an “OO” in every cup! |
